-Received enthusiastic responses from all over the world with twice the number of submissions than last year

Jeonju International Film Festival (Jeonju IFF) presents the five projects selected for the 2nd “JCP: NEXT EDITION.”

The “JCP: NEXT EDITION” is a project pitching event to select an international project for the feature film financing/production program “Jeonju Cinema Project” (JCP). The “JCP: NEXT EDITION,” a core program of the Jeonju Project Market (JPM), was launched last year in order to discover quality projects from overseas and establish a strong foundation of production to strengthen the ties with “JCP.”

The 2nd “JCP: NEXT EDITION” opened submissions from December 20th, 2018 to January 30th, 2019 and received enthusiastic responses. A total of 26 projects were submitted, which is twice the number of submissions than last year, and applicants submitted proposals from all over the world including Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe.

The selection committee selected 5 projects based on the submitted documents and the selection criteria. Electrocute by Gaston Solnicki, After Time by Peter Bo Rappmund, Outside Noise by Ted Fendt, Laotian Bride ? Border Bride by Wang Bing, and Do Fish Sleep with Their Eyes Open? by Nele Wohlatz, (order based on order of submission) were selected to pitch at the 2nd “JCP: NEXT EDITION.”

There was a large number of interesting and innovative proposals that shares the Jeonju IFF identity of shining a spotlight on the alternative movements of contemporary film. Proposals include projects with common themes portrayed with unique narrative structures to projects that challenge the cliches of traditional screenwriting.

Director Gaston Solnicki´s project Electrocute and director Nele Wohlatz’s project Do Fish Sleep with Their Eyes Open? received a high score for its interesting theme, innovating storytelling and the strong achievements verified by the director’s previous films. The project After Time by the director Peter Bo Rappmund captivated the selection committee for the timeliness of depicting the division of the Korean Peninsula, the strong merits of the project’s production method and characteristic which enables the director to exhibit its own signature style. Outside Noise was selected for its uniqueness, the project was shown as one of a kind which the director Ted Fendt can solely create. Wang Bing’s project Laotian Bride ? Border Bride’s dramatic story, the amount of time and energy devoted and the director’s capability of creating a sturdy work persuaded the selection committee. All the selected projects gave the conviction that they will turn into great films.

The Jeonju IFF stated, “We would also like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the applicants for enthusiastically submitting their great projects. Through “JCP: NEXT EDITION,” the Jeonju IFF will expand the festival’s foundation of production and present more diverse films.”

The 5 projects will be unveiled at the “JCP: NEXT EDITION” event during the 11th Jeonju Project Market. As the result of the pitching, only 1 film will (can) be selected as the “JCP 2020,” receive a production investment of maximum 100 mill KRW (approx.90,000 USD) and world premiered at the 21st Jeonju IFF in 2020. The pitching event will be held on May 6th and the final selection will be announced at the Jeonju Project Market awards ceremony on May 7th.
