‘Korean Competition’ Jury Press Conference of the 16th Jeonju International Film Festival (Jeonju IFF) was held at Press Center on Cinema Street, at 1:00pm, Monday, May 4. With Executive Programmer KIM Youngjin as a host, 3 juries, East Asian cinema critic Tony RAYNS, Director of How To Steal a Dog, KIM Sungho, and Programmer of International Film Festival of Mar de Plata in Argentina, Marcelo ALDERETE attended the event. They will go on a strict examination about 10 films from ‘Korean Competition’ where many young directors submitted.

Film Critic Tony RAYNS has profound knowledge about East Asian films, as he wrote a book and film about director JANG Sun-woo as well as brochures about Korean, Japanese, and Chinese movies. He said, “As a person who has seen the trends of Korean film since the end of 1980s, I focused on main features of Korean young directors who grew up at the middle of 1990 when Korean film industry largely changed.” He also talked about overall features of Korean Competition films, “Young directors in Korea these days speak more freely about sociopolitical issues than before, and I could see this trend reflected to those submitted films. Also, it was really interesting to see new trials of youngsters who have grown up with watching world cinemas.”

Programmer Marcelo ALDERETE highly appraised potentials and talents of young directors by saying, “When I see the films from Korean young directors, the most astonishing point is that I realize they made their first feature film only after seeing the catalogues. I mean rookies are making high-quality films with low amount of budget, too.” Director KIM Sungho had relationship with Jeonju IFF before, through Penny Love, the 9th part out of the omnibus film, Show Me the Money which opened the 10th edition. He told about his examination standards, “I’ve seen 9 films so far, and I will focus on new, experimental films from which I can feel young spirits.”

‘Grand Prize’ winner from ‘Korean Competition’ will be announced at Awards Ceremony which will be held at Jeonju Sports Stadium at 6:00pm, Wednesday, May 6. ‘Distribution Support Prize’ and ‘Upcoming Project Prize’, sponsored by CGV Arthouse, will also be announced at the event. In addition to ‘Korean Competition’ winners, ‘International Competition’ and ‘Korean Competition For Shorts’ winners will be unveiled as well on that day. From May 7 to 9, Jeonju IFF will continue its last-minute heat, with screenings of award-winning films and hottest titles.
