The 17th Jeonju International Film Festival (Jeonju IFF) unveils the recommendations to provide guide for movie selection.
Must-watch list announced on April 14 are total 9 films: Great Patrioteers(KIM Soo-hyun), Le Moulin(HUANG Ya-Li), Mr. Pig(Diego LUNA), The Tenth Man(Daniel BURMAN), Morris from America(Chad HARTRIGAN), Worst Woman(KIM Jongkwan), The Actor(YOKOHAMA Satoko), Much Ado About Nothing(Alejandro Fernandez ALMENDRAS) and Meurtriere(Philippe GRANDRIEUX). It includes feature, documentary and experimental films from USA, Chile, France, Taiwan and Korea.
Great Patrioteers from ‘Jeonju Cinema Project 2016’ is by KIM Soo-hyun who debuted with So Cute (2004) and received the Paesang Arts Award for Best New Director. He also directed Life is Peachy (2010) and Burn, Release, Explode, The Invincible (2012). He came back in 4 years with Great Patrioteers, a dark comedy about a young "keyboard warrior" and a conservative "patriotic senior citizen" who become close and prepare for their last big event that leads to disaster.
Three films from ‘World Cinemascape: Spectrum’ has been recommended which shows world cinema kaleidoscopically. Le Moulin is about Taiwan’s first modern art group, ‘Le Moulin Poetry Society’ which arose in the 1930s. Mr. Pig is by Diego LUNA, also known as a famous actor. It is about an old-school farmer from Georgia losing his family farm sets off on a road trip with Howard, his beloved pig. The Tenth Man is a new film by Daniel BURMAN, the winner of the Silver Bear at the 54th Berlin International Film Festival. This film shows the relationship of love and hatred between a son and his father, taken in Argentina.
Worst Woman from ‘Korean Competition’ and Morris from America from ‘Outdoor Screening’, a coming-of-age film, have fulfilled popularity and cinematic quality. The Actor from ‘Cinemafest’ is also worthy of notice. Morris from America is about an African-American boy named Morris who has moved to Germany, but it does not follow any other coming-of-age films. Worst woman describes human beings being constrained by relationships. The Actor shows an unknown actor struggling with his life.
Ones from ‘Special Focus’ are the opportunities not to be lost. Much Ado About Nothing which was invited to ‘Modern Chilean Cinema: A New Territory in Latin America’, picks out the injustices of life that are overwhelmed by the power of logic through a game of truth. Meurtriere by Philippe GRANDRIEUX, from ‘Philippe GRANDRIEUX: A Rediscovery of Cinematic Language’, shows artistic tendencies of Grandrieux. His films do not obsess to conventional styles or narratives or meanings and instead respect experience with images and uses naked bodies and the combination of sounds and images to tell stories whose roots are hard to track.
Tickets for these 9 recommended films can be purchased via early reservation. Tickets for General Screenings and Outdoor Screenings will be opened at 11:00am, April 14(Thu). Ticket reservation is available at Jeonju IFF’s official website (http://eng.jiff.or.kr). The 17th Jeonju IFF will be held from Thursday, April 28 to Saturday, May 7, for 10 days.
